About East Azerbaijan Province

East Azerbaijan province is the biggest and most populous province in the northwestern region of Iran. East Azerbaijan province has borders with the republics of Azerbaijan and Armenia from north, to its west and southwest is the West Azerbaijan province, it neighbors the Ardabil province from the east and ends at the Zanjan province from southeast. This province has cold mountainous climate and all of its territory is made up of mountains and highlands. The area of East Azerbaijan province is 45491 square meters which makes it the eleventh biggest province of Iran. This province is the meeting point for the two major mountain ranges of Alborz and Zagros, and its highest point is the peak of Sahand mountain. The center of East Azerbaijan province is Tabriz city. Marand, Maragheh and Mianeh are other important cities of this province. East Azerbaijan has the first place of non-oil exports in the country. Also this province is considered to be the safest province (with the lowest criminal cases) in the country.

Twin Waterfall of Chekan Village

Koureh Chekan waterfall is located in east Azerbaijan province and in Chekan village from environs of Maraghe County. This waterfall is twin and has about 9 meter height. Chekan village has been placed in a good weather valley and in south hillside of Sahand high mountains. Existence of tall trees such as walnuts, hazelnut and almonds, fruit gardens, intact nature together with beautiful springs and waterfalls has set this village in range of one of the most spectacular villages in east Azerbaijan. Sahand Mountain is one of the highest mountains of Azerbaijan and the most important silent volcanic mountains of Iran. Height of Sahand peaks is more than 3200 meters; Chekan village which is located on hillside of Sahand is a good location to ascend these peaks. Good-weather valleys of Sahand with green and productive pastures, grasslands and pretty wild flowers are the host of many tourists especially in spring ans summer.
Babak Fort

Babak castle was constructed on top of a mountain with 2600 meter height, near Kaleybar. The castle has been used in Sasanian era and before that in Parthian age. This castle has adopted its name from Babak Khoramdin, a patriot and militant leader against Arab invaders. Here, there has been a two-story castle. Before reaching to the gate of castle, you should pass a route which is faced in front of you as a narrow 200 meter corridor. This corridor was in a place which were under control of guardians in the past in order to check all traffic there. After passing this corridor, there is another entrance with irregular stairs by which you can arrive the castle. Then, you have the main hall around which there are seven rooms. These rooms all reach to central salon. This castle reminds the bravery of famous Iranian warlord Babak Khoramdin, the leader of red-clad group. The unattainable castle of Babak was about 22 years unavailable to Arabs and resisted against Arabs. Babak castle was recorded in list of nationsl, cultural and historical opuses in 1345 (1966) and its repair was ordered by cultural heritage organization of east Azerbaijan in order to make it now one of the most tourist attracting places in province.
Waterfall of Aido Ghamosh Dam

Waterfall of Aido-Ghamosh Dam is located in 25 kilometer distance of southwest of Mianeh County in East Azerbaijan province in northwest of Iran. This dam has been designed with motivation to exploit surface flow of Aido-Ghamush River which is one of the main branches of Ghazal-Ozan River. Ghazal-Ozan River in the rest of its path joints Sefid-Rud River which falls into Caspian Sea. In one of the subsidiary valleys around Aido-Ghamush dam in a beautiful nature, artificial waterfall was created by canals of this dam and made an excellent perspective that has been paid great attention by families of Mianeh in recent years. This waterfall is seasonal and it may not be observable due to closed canals of this dam.
Sahand Ski Resort

Sahand ski resort (run) of east Azerbaijan province is the biggest ski resort (run) in northwest of country and regarding to its vast area and facilities inside the resort such as 1200 meter length of ski zone, it has attracted many athletes for sport, exercise and competition to itself. In 2014 (1393), stopwatch (chronometer) training class was held for first time in Iran’s ski history under supervision of ski committee of province. Sahand ski resort (run) of Tabriz has been recorded globally as international ski resort (run) by international ski federation.
El Golu Park, Tabriz

El-Gölü or Shah-Gölü is one of the most beautiful and important places for recreation in Tabriz, which is located southeast of Tabriz, 7 kilometers to the city center. This place was created in Ağ Qoyunlus time, and expanded in Safavid era. Shah-Gölü Lake in which boating is done is 12 meters deep. In addition, there is an amusement park (Luna Park) as well as several places of residence in this area. Due to the construction of El-Gölü Pars Hotel, this area has become a universally popular. El-Gölü Park was registered in Iran's National Heritage on February 15, 2009 under the registration number of 24774.
Kharaba Dayirman Waterfall (Asiyab Kharabeh)

Asiyab Kharabeh waterfall is one of the most spectacular areas in east Azerbaijan, and this waterfall due to ruins of a watermill is known as Asiyab Kharabe/ broken watermill. Many small and big waterfalls have been made in Asiyab Kharabe that fall from top of the mill to down. Water of this waterfall originates from a beautiful and crystal fountain of Kiamaki mountain, one of the high mountains of Dizmar district in west of Arasbaran, Marand county and Zonouz.
Makidi Forest Valley

Makidi valley is a green and forest valley which has been located among Arasbaran forests in north of east Azerbaijan and in Kaleybar County. Makidi valley in which Makidi forest Park exists, is one of the interesting places for tourists due to its many springs and pleasant weather. The more we go from east of Kaleybar to its north or west, we see more dense forests but less steppe forest. Makidi village has been located in this valley. Before 1960s, this district was consisted of some villages including Hussein Abad. Shams Pahlavi, the sister of Iran’s former king chose this area for living as she had Asthma, and the Pearl castle, her residential house was built by the foundation of Frank Lloyd wright. This relic was registered in the list of Iran’s national relics in 2003 with the registration number of 7067.
Ala daghlar of Tabriz (Colorful mountains)

Colorful mountains of gray concrete cities have absorbed humans so much that creation of earth was such colorless and sophisticated. When work is done by great painter, there are infinite color spectrums. In not so far distance, God panels can be seen by soul and heart. One of the plans of this great artist is Ala Daghlar that touring it and constant photography can refresh human. Ala Daghlar or colored mountains are in distance of 25 kilometers from northeast of Tabriz and on the way of Khajeh County and Mianeh-Zanjan highway. Ala-Daghlar is the local name of mountains and colored valleys which were located in parts of Azerbaijan and Zanjan. Colored mountains or Ala-Daghlar is one of the pretty views on earth. Near these mountains, there are some villages that have been located among colorful mountains. The soil used in thatch which are for building house is red.
Kandovan Village

Kandovan village is an up-country area of Sahand Mountains that its natural and specific architecture has made it globally popular. Historical village of Kandovan is one of the three rocky villages in the world. Antiquity of this tourist village gets backs to 6000 years ago. Researches of archeology has estimated its age up to 7000 years old. What gives Kandovan an antique nature is presence of 117 families and houses inside rocky cone and pyramid-shaped masses in which villagers has made houses, corral, warehouse and workshops. Appellation of Kandovan is due to hive-shaped houses which have been embodied inside conical rocks. The properties of these houses are that the weather inside is warm in winter and cold in summer. About traditional architecture of Kandovan, some researchers and geographers believe that kandovan has no similar in Ian, and its architecture is rocky architecture. And they define that rocky architecture is much more important than common architecture from renovation aspect. Existence of tasty mineral water, unique rocky and conic houses, green valley, desirable mountainous weather, pleasant dairies and natural honey have made this village under attention of followers, together with sedative environment and evening silence and a graceful breeze.
Arg of Tabriz

Arg-e AliShah or Arg-e Tabriz is the symbol of resistance for natural and other kind of disaster that happened to it for over 700 years which latest was 1179 Gregorian calender. Constructing of this huge castle which was built to be mosque, started at 716 to and finished at 724 lunar years (1316-1323 Gregorian calendar), when Taj El-din AliShah Jelani was minster of Oljaitu and his son Abu Saeed Bahador Khan, kings of Ilkhanid dynasty rulers. Without any hesitation Arg of AliShah is one of Islamic art masterpiece that it greatness is so unique. Architectural style of this magnificence building is Azari style and its architect was Ostad Falaki Tabrizi. The devastating earthquake of Tabriz in 1193 lunar years (1779 Gregorian calendar) and some wars and attacks to this castle, latest destruction by Iranian government’s local governor in Tabriz at 1980 Gregorian calender destroyed most part of it. Thanks to God that builders of Arg-e Ali Shah castle, they used Saroj and durable materials for building this highest and firm structure in its time and even later for a longest time.
